Help Xbox Live Improve – Earn Achievements and Avatar Gear
Want to earn achievements and avatar gear with absolutely no effort? Volunteer your time and bandwidth to the new “Xbox Live Labs” application to help improve the Xbox Live service.
Xbox LIVE Labs performs a number of network tests from your console to Xbox LIVE. These results are recorded solely for the purpose of testing and improving the service. Although we want your support, participating in Xbox LIVE Labs is entirely optional and voluntary. These results are recorded solely for the purpose of testing and improving the service and will not be used to identify you.
As you can see from the image above, the application performs tests on your Xbox and internet connection in 3 stages, ranging from 30 minutes up to 6 hours. Completing each test earns you an achievement, and one of three items for your Avatar: “a lab coat, brain helmet, and crazy mad scientist hair.”
I’m actually running this right now, as I’m typing this up. The applications warns that you will NOT be able to do anything else on your Xbox while it is running – including streaming movies, or playing games. The application will also slow down your internet speed, and warns that you will be responsible for any additional bandwidth charges to your ISP, if applicable.
If you’re bored, or hungry for free avatar items and achievements, download it from the Community channel when you sign in. Xbox Live Labs will be running from March 10th, to the 27th. It is only available to the United States.
